What is bias-motivated violence?
Bias-motivated violence refers to violence directed at specific individuals, groups of people, or their property based on the actual or perceived membership of the targeted person to a group that the perpetrator dislikes, holds prejudices against, or hates.

Important!
Crimes include not only physical attacks but also verbal threats that create a reasonable fear that they will be carried out.

Remember!
The most crucial factor is the perpetrator’s motive —dislike or hatred toward a particular group of people.

Bias-motivated crimes (or hate crimes) under Polish Penal Code:
art. 119 § 1
Using violence or unlawful threats
art. 256 § 1
Publicly inciting hatred based on nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, or lack of religion
art. 257
Publicly insulting a person or group
It’s essential to remember that bias-motivated crimes can take various forms:
- spitting, slapping, humiliation,
- destruction of property,
- vandalism or arson,
- intimidation or threats,
- insults or gestures,
- attacks in written form (letters, leaflets, posters, graffiti),
- insulting religious feelings,
- psychological or emotional abuse,
- assault, murder.
Reporting bias-motivated violence:
It’s important to report any type of prejudice-motivated violence, whether you are the victim or a witness to such an event.
At the moment of the event: Call for help by dialing 112.
Provide the location of the event, information about the people involved, and the type of assistance needed.

Remember!
The Nomada Association has extensive experience supporting victims of bias-motivated violence, so it’s worth reaching out to us. We also collaborate with legal advisors and attorneys who can support you before the police, prosecutor’s office, or court.
