For years we have been observing refugees trying to reach Europe, crossing one border after another. Since a few months ago we have been trying to break the barrier of anxieties fueled by the media and ordinary human fear of the unknown. We see EU countries building fences and cutting themselves off from those who seek shelter, forgetting about solidarity. We are trying to raise curiosity and understanding for refugees – those who have no safe place to live and are exposed to prejudice.
We want to say “Marhaba”* to newcomers and the people who are still waiting at the gates of Europe. For the last four months, supported by guests from Syria, Germany and Poland, we have been encouraging you to join us.
The project consisted in 4 open meetings accompanied by film screenings and workshops attended by 55 participants (teachers, doctors and social workers) who contributed to our publications.
It was a success. 350 people participated in the meetings and we managed to prepare 3 publications. The first one will support teachers in addressing the refugee subject in class. The second publication directed to medical workers will help them treat muslim patients. It provides a glimpse on behaviors and culture codes and gives information about diseases that the refugees from Syria may suffer from (chapter prepared by Polska Misja Medyczna). The third guide is directed to social workers who will assist the refugees in their integration.
• Marhaba is a greeting in Arabic language
On 22 nd April (Friday) at 12 PM we’d like to invite you to the final meeting.
There, we’ll talk about the publications and present Antakia Street – an online interactive story about refugees. Invited guests will be talking about the challenges of integration.
